Susan Fitter Sloane, Global Manners

  1. Connect Better: Shake hands with people you meet or see again.
  2. Be A Great Guest: Always bring a small gift when visiting others.
  3. Let Others Know You Care:  Say something compassionate when people tell you their bad news like, “I’m so sorry to hear that…” or “It must be very difficult for you…”
  4. Use Reflective Listening:  Reflect back what you hear another person say; try, “It sounds like you…” or “I’m hearing you say that…”
  5. Curb Impulsivity In Relationships: Think twice before flaming another and severing a relationship; take a 24 hour break to reconsider you possible actions.
  6. Listen Well:  Talk only half as much as you listen to others.
  7. Dine Elegantly And Globally:  Perfect your “Continental Dining” skills; use the fork in your left hand and knife or spoon in your right.
  8. Be Discreet In All Communications:  Don’t email or post anything you don’t want to be public or share with the World.
  9. Connect Other People:  Introduce people to one another by saying, “X, have you met Y?” or “X you know Y, don’t you?” or be more formal with, “X, I’d like to introduce to you Y.”
  10. Talk Before Writing About Sensitive Issues: Don’t use email as a way to communicate when an issue is emotional or difficult.
